The UTEP cross country team will host the 26th Annual Lori Fitzgerald Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 10 at the Chamizal Memorial National Park.
The 5K men’s race is scheduled to get underway at 8:30 a.m. followed by the women’s 7K race at 9:15 a.m.
Competing in this year’s meet are the men’s and women’s teams from NM State, Western New Mexico University and El Paso Community College.
Paced by Risper Kimaiyo’s top-meet time of 16:22, the UTEP women’s team defeated NM State in a dual competition a year ago.
On the men’s side, Justice Chirchir set the fastest time in the men’s race crossing the finish line at 20:14. Elkana Rotich followed with 20:45 to take second.
UTEP kicked off its 2011 campaign last weekend at the Lobo Invitational. Kimaiyo claimed her third consecutive title clocking in a time of 17:16 at the UNM North Golf Course. The women had four finishers in the top 20.
Leading the men’s team was Rotich posting a time of 25:19 to place third overall for the squad. The Miners had three top-10 finishers among the 93 runners.
Following last weekend’s performance Kimaiyo and Rotich swept Conference USA Athlete of the Week honors. It marked Kimaiyo’s eighth and Rotich’s third career honor.
The Miners will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 17 when they travel to Las Cruces, N.M. to participate in the Kachina Classic.
