EL PASO- The Board of Directors of Las Americas has selected a local doctor and a UTEP professor to receive this year's "Border Heroes" award.
The award honors those who have dedicated their lives to making our border a more just and humane place.
Kathleen (Kathy) Staudt, PhD, is a professor of political science at the University of Texas at El Paso. She founded the Center for Civic Engagement, engaged thousands of UTEP students in community organizations and published sixteen books, mostly studying life on the U.S.-Mexico border region.
Dr. Jacob Heydemann is an El Paso orthopedic surgeon who generously donates his services to clinics and hospitals in Juárez and other parts of Mexico on a regular basis. Dr. Heydemann’s humanitarian work has been recognized by the government of Mexico, among other entities.
