LAS CRUCES- A car chase through Las Cruces ended with one man under arrest and the discovery of a large amount of marijuana.
Jose Olguin, 30, is charged with aggravated fleeing a law enforcement officer, driving while intoxicated and possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute. Olguin also received citations for running three red lights, and driving while his license is revoked or suspended.
Early Wednesday morning, a Las Cruces Police officer saw a 1995 Honda Accord come to a screeching stop for a red light at the intersection of Picacho Avenue and Valley Drive.
When the officer tried to pull Olguin over, he sped away at speeds of up to 90 miles per hour. Olguin’s car collided with a house, and then he attempted to run from officers but was captured in the backyard of a nearby residence.
One of Olguin’s passengers, 53-year-old Richard R. Evaro, had an outstanding warrant for his arrest and was taken into custody. Another passenger, a 41-year-old woman, was not charged with a crime. No injuries were reported by the passengers or the occupants of the home that was struck. Damages to the house were considered minimal.
Because Olguin had previously been arrested for DWI and was driving on a suspended license, officers seized the vehicle and began to inventory items within it. That’s when officer found a brick of marijuana, several baggies and a digital scale in the car’s trunk.
Olguin is being held at the Dona Ana County Detention Center with bond set at $12,000.
