EL PASO- Many people lined up today to talk to local businesses at a veterans’ job fair at the Camino Real Hotel.
Labor experts say the unemployment rate for veterans in the U.S. is about 15 percent - that's compared to about 9 percent for the non-veteran population. One reason may be because they don't communicate with employers how skills they've learned in the military can be applied to the workforce.
"We try to educate the employer about veteran job skills and the veteran we try and get them not to speak in military terms so that we can make a match quicker," says Armand Escalera, with the Department of Labor.
He also advises veterans to research the employer and to get any necessary certificates while still in the military.
