EL PASO- One of the most well-known artists in El Paso has moved his gallery to another location, not far from where it used to be located.
The Hal Marcus Gallery is located at the corner of Oregon Street and River Avenue and Hal says he couldn't have found a more perfect location. The two-story home has plenty of space, both inside and for parking.
"It’s just more convenient. It's more user-friendly. We're the only tenant in this building and we have more space and we are able to personalize it. Before we were renting and now we own the place," said Hal.
Hal, who's been painting for 40 years, gave us a tour of his new gallery. He showed us 2000 paintings he has up for sale, which includes his work as well as other artists. "It’s all about local art. Many of the artists, we've been carrying for 10 to15 years and we know our business," saidHal.
Down in the basement he showed us his collection of early El Paso artwork. Then there's all of Hal's own work, including a family portrait he calls "The Magic Bus". He's the driver by the way.
Besides the extra space, Hal says he likes the gallery location, which helps him feel like he's in the heart of El Paso. “Out the window, you can see El Paso High. You can see the Women's Club," said Hal. “From here you can also look downtown. You can see the new Mills Building and the Plaza Hotel and all the landmarks downtown."
And he's looking forward to the end of road construction on Oregon. The improved street will be a thoroughfare between downtown and UTEP. "They’ve widened the streets over here on Oregon Street. They're going to be putting up trees. Over here where you see the red things, those are all going to be antique lamps. So it's going to have an old-style-type feeling," said Hal.
He says he's happy to be a part of a neighborhood with so much promise and part of an art community that has supported him throughout the years. "We have customers who are loyal to us. When they're looking for art, they come and see us and they trust us. We have good customer service and we like to make friends for life. That's what it's all about," said Hal.
The Hal Marcus Gallery is located at 1308 North Oregon. It's at the corner of Oregon and River Street. The gallery is open from Tuesday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
