Former New Mexico State running back Seth Smith and tight end/long snapper Kyle Nelson have both signed free agent contracts with NFL teams. Smith signed with the San Francisco 49ers, while Nelson signed with the New Orleans Saints.
Smith, a native of Oakland, Calif., played from 2009-10 as the running back position. In 2010, Smith rushed for 385 yards and three touchdowns, while catching five passes for 29 yards. For his career, Smith rushed for 1,401 yards and four touchdowns. In 2009, Smith became the first Aggie running back to rush for over 1,000 yards in a season since the 2000 season.
Nelson, a native of Waco, Texas, competed for the Aggies from 2007-10 playing tight end and as the team’s long snapper. As a senior, Nelson caught 41 passes for 371 yards and a touchdown, averaging nine yards a catch and 30.9 yards per game. He ended his career with 66 receptions for 559 yards and two touchdowns. Nelson also played on special teams, collecting 18 tackles in his four seasons.
