Counselor's Mistake Means Some Students Did Not Graduate

EL PASO- A dozen Burges High School students are being told that despite walking across the stage last month and completing courses, an error by a counselor means they're not quite done.

A concerned parent called NewsChannel 9 today and told us that his daughter, who graduated in the top 10 percent of her class is now being asked to return to school as early as Monday to complete one more class.

The father said he received a phone call from Burgess High explaining that his daughter took a forensics class instead of a physics class. His daughter is currently vacationing in Phoenix and is preparing to attend St. Mary's University in two weeks. Sanchez is concerned that his daughter will not have time to complete the class.

EPISD released the following statement:

"We want to first apologize to each student for the inconvenience that this has caused.

Thanks to a diligent and dedicated counselor serving our students over the Summer Break, we have discovered that about a dozen students who graduated in June have errors on their transcripts that need our immediate attention. These errors are isolated to Burges High School. We are in the process of contacting the affected students.

Many of these students are getting ready to attend college or start their careers and we will work with them on an individual basis to get the matter resolved in an expeditious manner. The summer school program will be tailored to each of the students’ needs.

We will review the cause of the errors when school personnel return from Summer Break and take any appropriate action to correct this isolated situation."
