If age has taken a toll on your skin, a new and improved technology claims that it can help tighten your problem areas. Thermage has been around for years but within the past couple of years the technique became more effective and less uncomfortable. And a plastic surgery center in West El Paso says that's helped to make Thermage a popular procedure.
A simple-looking instrument is said to do a whole lot of tightening for many parts of your body. "This machine is called the Themacool and it performs a procedure called Thermage," said Dr. Lyle Weeks with Cosmetic Surgery & Laser Center in West El Paso.
Patient Bridget Smith came in to Cosmetic Surgery & Laser Center to use Thermage to tighten the skin around her stomach. "Underneath, yeah my muscles are tight and I don't really need to do any kind of surgery for that," said Smith. "All I really wanted to do was tighten the skin, so this is a great answer to that problem."
Dr. Weeks says Thermage is mainly used on the face to tighten saggy skin and wrinkles but it's also us on the stomach, arms, thighs and back. And he says you can see by the before and after pictures that the results are pretty amazing.
This is how thermage works: "Having this machine used on your body is like having a little tiny microwave that goes off underneath the surface of the skin," said Dr. Weeks.
The heat stimulates your collagen, which is what gives body tissue firmness and strength. Thermage also promotes new collagen growth.
"It feels like a little bit of heat, just like warmth and they're just little pulses and then she moves it and then she moves it and you fill it in a different area," said Smith.
Laser Technician Yolanda Morales says she has performed hundreds of Thermage treatments. She says when the technology first came out a decade ago, it was uncomfortable and not as effective. But advancements have made results remarkable and the procedure relatively painless.
"Especially now that people start to hear that it's not uncomfortable anymore, we're definitely getting more patients," said Morales.
Morales says the procedure takes about two hours and, once they're done, patients can go back to their normal routine. "There's no down town. I mean, it's not a surgery so they can right back out and do whatever it was they were doing before," said Morales.
Smith says she can't wait till she sees the final results in a few months.
"I'm excited. I know it's going to take a little while but I'm excited after looking at the before and after pictures. I think it's going to be really great!" said Smith.
Thermage representatives say results can last years, depending on your skin condition and aging process.
