Former NMSU Head Coach, also a former UTEP Assistant Football Coach, Hal Mumme was back in the borderland Wednesday for the Western States Football Camp at Burges High School. Mumme, the Head Coach at McMurray University in Abilene, is helping run the camp with fellow offensive guru Sonny Detmer, father to Tye and Koy Detmer, former college and NFL standout quarterbacks.
While at NMSU, Mumme battled prostate cancer, and told Newschannel 9 that is he fine, and feeling much better, ready to lead McMurray for the third season, and was happy Detmer invited him to help teach the camp.
"Well I appreciate Sonny Detmer inviting us, he's been doing it for a long time and it's a great camp. When we were at State, all of my assistants were able to come over and work, but by rule I was not allowed too. When he asked us too, I jumped on it. It's a great camp."
The camp will run again tomorrow at Burges, featuring kids ages 8-8th grade. For more information, or how to sign up for next year's camp, call (915) 857-8818.
