TAMAULIPAS, MEXICO - Authorities say they have arrested the mastermind behind the deaths of 250 immigrants found in mass graves in northern Mexico.
Police say Edgar Huerta hijacked two trucks with more than 70 migrants on board who were later killed.
He is also accused of hijacking six buses full of migrants who were taken to safe houses for the Zetas cartel, tortured and recruited to join the gang.
Rods in Tamaulipas, where the mass graves were found, are a major route for buses that have become targets for gangs.
President Felipe Calderon is trying to keep law and order in place in the area, which is home to natural gas fields near the Gulf of Mexico.
Nearly 40,000 people have died as a result of violence in Mexico over the past four years.
