EL PASO – El Paso Electric said about 163,000 of its customers lost power overnight.
Blackouts were first reported around 12:20 a.m. Monday.
Two of El Paso Electric's major transmission lines went down. One of those lines, from the Newman power plant, knocked out power to the substation north of Loop 375, leaving the Northeast and parts Eastside in the dark.
The electric company tells us the system is built to protect itself when this happens so it starts shutting down power to parts of they city.
That's what caused power outages on the Westside, Central, and even out in Horizon.
Power was back up in less than an hour to most customers, but 4,000 people didn't have it restored for 3 hours.
We'll have a full report, tonight, on NewsChannel 9 at 5.
