NM State picked up its first WAC Tournament win in 2009 over Fresno State 7-4 in Honolulu, Hawaii. NM State went on to defeat La. Tech 6-5 in the winners bracket before losing two-consecutive games to Fresno State 9-5 and 5-3 in the Championship round.
The Aggies fell to Hawai'i 13-7 in round one of play last year and got ousted from the tournament after losing 5-4 to Nevada in an elimination game.
The Aggies are 17-11 against La. Tech all-time and traveled to Ruston La., April 8 - 10 to take on the Bulldogs in a four game series. The two teams split the series 2-2.
The Aggies went into that series winning seven straight against the Bulldogs. NM State and the Bulldogs have face off only one other time in the WAC Tournament with the Aggies pulling out a 6-5 win over LA Tech in 2009 when the tournament was held in Honolulu.
In game one of the series the Aggies defeated the Bulldogs 4-2. Sophomore left-hand pitcher Ryan Beck went eight innings with three strikeouts and took his record to 6-2 on the year. Junior closer Scott Coffman came in for the ninth inning and picked up save No. 5 of the year.
In Saturday's doubleheader the Aggies fell to the Bulldogs 7-0 in the first game, but came back and won the second game 7-5. In the first game pitcher Trey Ross fell to 5-2 on the year after working 4 1/3 innings, with two strikeouts and giving up seven runs. In the second game of the doubleheader right-hand pitcher Tyler Mack took the win when he came in during the second inning to work seven innings and only one run. In the series finale NM State was held scoreless for the fourth time this season (second time in the series) when the Bulldogs defeated the Aggies 10-0. Pitcher Dan Reid went 4 1/3 innings and struck out six batters before he took a line drive off his non-throwing hand pulling him out of the game. That was Reid's first loss of the year.
