EL PASO- Teachers involved in the Safe Routes to Schools program will get a lesson in bike and pedestrian safety from the Texas Bike Coalition on Thursday.
The training, which is held at MacArthur Elementary/Intermediate School, is part of a $4.7 million grant program which begins this Fall for 3rd to 5th grade students at 47 elementary schools.
Students who participate and successfully complete the program are eligible for a free bicycle and helmet. Each of the 47 campuses will award 134 bicycles at the end of the school year for the next two years.
Funding will be used to educate students on bike and pedestrian safety and traffic education, a public awareness campaign, overtime costs for law enforcement, and the purchase of bicycles and safety gear.
