SOCORRO- Socorro has a new Mayor tonight, but only for a while. Councilman Jesse Gandara is now interim Mayor, after voters last Saturday rejected his Uncle Willie Gandara.
Two seats were noticeably empty tonight at the meeting, once filled by Mayor Willie Gandara and Councilman Luis Varela.
Both are no longer in office, as they face criminal charges. It took just fifteen minutes for council members to nominate and choose Jesse Gandara, Willie's nephew, as Socorro's new man-in-charge.
He'll run things until a new Mayor is chosen in November. The choice wasn't a surprise though. Jesse had been Mayor Pro-Temp during his Uncle's term, making him the logical choice to fill the void.
We asked Jesse if the relationship is strained with his Uncle.
"I take my position very seriously so I'm able to separate between family and what's best for this community and when I'm on the council, that's what it's about, what's best for this community," Gandara said.
New Councilwoman Maria Reyes was also sworn in tonight as District One's new representative. She promised to work with the council to get things done for Socorro.
