The New Mexico State men’s golf team has claimed the lead at the 2011 WAC Championships after round two, carding a team score of 7-over par, 294, at the par 72 – 7,313 yard Rio Secco Golf Club. The Aggies hold a nine stroke lead over Fresno State going into the final round of play on Wednesday.
The Aggies went 9-under par on holes 17 and 18 in the second round, recording seven birdies and an eagle.
Sophomore Justin Shin bounced back from a 2-over par in round one to card a team low round of 2-under par, 70. Shin recorded four birdies on the day and an eagle on the par-5 17th. Shin is currently third at even-par after two rounds. Junior Gaston De La Torre fired a second round score of 1-over par, 73, recording four birdies on the day and playing the par-5’s at 3-under par. He is currently fifth overall at 1-over par for the tournament.
Senior Tim Madigan fired a 3-over par, 75 in round two with three birdies on the day including birdies on the final two holes of the round. Madigan is sixth overall at 2-over par. Junior Joon Lee is currently tied for seventh overall after a second score of 4-over par, 76. Lee collected four birdies on the day, all of them on the back nine, including finishing his round with birdies on 17 and 18. He is 4-over par for the tournament going into the final round.
Junior Zachery Fullerton was 4-over par, 76 in his second round and is tied for 11th. Fullerton recorded just one birdie in his round.
NM State leads the tournament at 8-over par, followed by Fresno State (+17), San Jose State (+21), Louisiana Tech, Nevada and Idaho all at (+29). Boise State (+42), Utah State (+43) and Hawai’i (+45) round out the other WAC teams. Damian Telles of Idaho continues to lead the tournament at 5-under par.
The three-day tournament wraps up on Wednesday with third-round tee times beginning at 7:30 a.m.
