Today is "Melanoma Monday" and to raise awareness about skin cancer, the American Academy of Dermatology has released a study about tanning beds.
The survey is called "Indoor Tanning: Teens and Young Women." Researchers found that 30% of Caucasian teens have used a tanning bed in the last year. The Academy says that tanning beds increase the risk of melanoma by 75%.The majority of the people surveyed admitted they think people look more attractive with a tan.
The Academy says that one in five Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer and 75% of all skin cancer deaths are from melanoma. One American dies from melanoma every 61 minutes.
