Burges High School Junior Danny Tarango once held the fastest time in the nation this year in the 800 Meter. In fact, Tarango held that record for 3 weeks, until it was broken last weekend. At the District 1-4A Championships at Andress High School, Tarango won the 800M at 1:51:09. A high school athlete just broke that mark with a finish at 1:50:44. Tarango still ranks #1 in the state of Texas, and #2 in the nation heading into the regional championships on Monday in Lubbock.
"It's something cool, something hard to accomplish. I just had the correct mentality and just went for it. I was tired, but happy I won it. They told me it was 1:51 and I didn't really believe it. I am going to have to work hard and go faster to stay there."
Schools that are showing interest in Tarango are Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, Duke, Wake Forest and Georgia, among others. Tarango ranks in the top 25% of his class at Burges High School.
