EL PASO – If you've ever paid money for a service you didn't receive, then you'll empathize with an El Paso woman who claims she's been wronged after shelling out hundreds of dollars. She reached out to our Troubleshooters team for help.
“This has been going on since March 17th,” said Emilie Swartz.
Swartz said she's getting the runaround from a man she had paid $360 to, to do some work on her roof. She told us she and her daughter had previously used the services of Carmelo Romero Jr., from the Horizon Moving company.
“We came here to bring my daughter's stuff from Fort Worth. He then helped me take the stuff to her apartment and I told him the work I needed done around here. I asked him if he knew anybody and he said, 'Oh, I can do that,'” said Swartz.
So, Swartz hired the man to do some roof work.
“He said he'd do it in the next few days, but he needed the money up-front to buy supplies. And, I said, 'All of it?' and he said, 'Yes.'”
But, Swartz said he never showed up, and when she'd call him to see what was going on, he'd come up with different excuses. Swartz said for the past month, she's tried to get her money back.
“Numerous phone calls again about his wife bringing the money, he's sending the money, he's sent the money but it was returned and all kinds of excuses and I still do not have my money,” said Swartz.
When we spoke to the man, he claimed that it was Swartz who owed him money, and denied all of her claims. However, we saw the $360 check that Swartz had paid out to him for roof work.
Swartz feels she was taken advantage of.
“I think because he thinks I have a big house I won't miss $360.”
Swartz said her next step, is to file a police report.
