EL PASO - The El Paso Fire Department checks something called the Texas Drought Index, and right now the index reads -2.3. That number might not mean much to you or me but at the fire department it spells trouble, extreme dry conditions like those in Ruidoso.
We can do our own part to keep our neighborhoods safe.
"Remove anything that could be an ignition point outside, make sure if you barbecue nothing gets away from you, and make sure that ashes and charcoal are put out completely," said fire spokesman John Concha. "Just be vigilant and look around your property, make sure its maintained and properly cleaned up so that no ignition is possible.”
If you see a fire truck speed past during this drought, look for a second truck too. The fire department is prepared to throw extra water on any fire before it has a chance to spread.
