The UTEP softball team dropped both ends of a twinbill to Memphis on Satuday, falling to 15-17 and 1-4 in Conference USA. The pair will meet again on Sunday at noon.
Becky Smith laced a pair of home runs in the doubleheader and finished 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Kayleigh Walts was also stellar at the plate, going 3-for-6 with three runs.
The Miners combined for 11 hits on the day, but gave up 18 runs (15 hits) to the Tigers, including eight in the fifth frame of Game 2. Courtney Auger (7-8) took the Game 1 loss and Joanna Krienitz fell to (1-4) after taking the loss.
UTEP jumped to a 2-0 lead off a two-RBI home run by Smith in the day's opener, driving in Walts.
The Tigers scored one run in the third and and one in the fifth to tie the game at 2-2.
UTEP answered back in the bottom of the frame, taking advantage of a Tiger error, allowing Walts to come home.
Memphis' Kamri Chester laced an RBI-double in the top of the sixth, knotting the game at 3-3, the Tigers took the lead in the top of the seventh after scoring two runs for the 5-3 victory.
Memphis (20-7, 5-3) scored in all five innings in the second game to power past the Miners. UTEP and the Tigers were knotted after two innings but the Tigers garnered momentum after taking a 5-2 advantage after four innings of play and held the Miners scoreless in the third and fourth frames.
The Tigers scored eight runs in the fifth and final frame to take the doubleheader from the Miners.
