TUCSON, AZ— The suspect behind the Tucson shooting rampage nearly two months ago had new charges filed against him on Friday.
Jared Lee Loughner has been indicted on 49 new charges, including murder. The new charges also add to the other charges he was facing in connection to the Jan. 8 shooting. The latest indictment charges Loughner with murder in the deaths of U.S. District Judge John Roll and Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords' aide, Gabe Zimmerman. The indictment also covers all 19 of the victims who were either killed or injured in the January shooting.
Loughner will be arraigned on the new charges in federal court on March 9 in Tucson. Loughner has pleaded not guilty to the original federal charges of trying to assassinate Giffords and kill two of her aides.
Federal prosecutors have not said whether they would seek the death penalty.
