EL PASO - A teen is responsible for a fire at Montwood High bathroom Thursday morning, according to an El Paso Fire Department spokesman.
Firefighters rushed to the school, in the 12000 block of Montwood, around 10:30 a.m. Thursday, to find the damaged restroom. The school's sprinkler system put out the flames, according to spokesman Sam Peña in a news release sent Thursday evening.
An on-campus officer was hurt while trying to help put out the fire, said Peña.
Fire investigators ruled it arson, and arrested a 15-year-old for setting the fire, said Peña. Details about how the teen allegedly set the fire were not given.
It is also not known who the teen is, and if he or she is a student at Montwood.
The fire caused $5,000 in damages.
The teen was turned over to the Juvenile Detention Center, said Peña.
According to the news release, arson at a school is a second degree felony, and could be upgraded to a first degree felony if someone is hurt.
