U.S. to Seek Extradition in Shooting of ICE Agents

WASHINGTON D.C. - An El Paso ICE agent ambushed in Mexico may eventually see the gunmen who shot him face to face.

Victor Avila is recovering from leg wounds - his partner, Jaime Zapata, was killed in the attack.

Today, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano says the United States will seek the extradition of the suspects in the fatal shooting.

Speaking before the House of  Representatives' Homeland Security Committee, Napolitano said it is her understanding the case will be prosecuted in the United States, but "those are decisions that are yet to come."

Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX) then asked Napolitano if the Obama administration would seek the extradition of the suspects from Mexico, and she said "yes."

Agents Zapata and Avila were driving to Mexico City from San Luis Potosi when they were attacked on a major highway. U.S. authorities say  both agents identified themselves as U.S. diplomats just before the shooting.

Mexican authorities have arrested six men, four women and a minor for connections to the attack. The suspects are allegedly linked to the Zetas drug gang.
