Irvin High School's Byelka Soto and Eastwood's Andy Rico had been there before. In the 2010 State Wrestling Tournament, Soto finished third, while Rico won the State Championship. In 2011, their senior years, both wanted the Championship... badly.
Andy Rico was thrown down hardly, illegally, in the 152 pound championship match by Klein Oak’s Cougar Babin, disqualifying Babin, making Rico the state champ.
On the girls side, Irvin High School's Byelka Soto knew a Bronze medal was not in her future, focusing on the Gold once she got to the 148-pound championship match. Byelka Soto defeated Jodi Martinez of Amarillo Tascosa, 9-4.
"I thought of going to state, but I never thought first, until last year when I placed third. I wanted to push myself to get first. This year I was very nervous, so much I wanted to cry. I knew how I felt since last year because I lost only once, and I knew what the feeling was, and I just wanted first", said Soto.
