MEXICO CITY— The "regional boss" for the Zetas drug gang accused of ambushing and killing a U.S. ICE agent and injuring another ICE agent was arrested in Mexico on Sunday.
Mexican marines said Sergio “El Toto” Mora was the boss of Julian “El Piolin” Zapata Espinoza, who was arrested last week and allegedly confessed that he took part in the shooting. Mora was among several suspects shown to the media on Monday in Mexico. Officials said Mora and Espinoza belong to a cell of Los Zetas drug cartel.
ICE Agent Jaime Zapata was killed when six suspects, whom were arrested last week, ambushed him and ICE Agent Victor Avila on road between Mexico City and Monterrey. Avila was shot and wounded in the ambush.
The State Department praised the six arrests and repeated Washington's strong support for Mexico's crackdown on drug cartels.
A statement from the Mexican military said Mora was arrested in a Sunday morning raid in the city of Saltillo in Northern Mexico. A spokesman did not say if Mora was directly involved in the attack of Zapata and Avila.
Video shot at the scene of the shooting showed a blue SUV riddled with bullet holes at the side of the highway.
