Couple Married in 1934 on Valentine's Day
ROCHESTER, N.Y.— Valentine's Day is a popular day to get married— El Paso also had their own share of marriages at the courthouse— and for one couple, Monday marked their 77th wedding anniversary.
Virgilia, 102, and Robert Unger, 101, got married on Valentine's Day in Ripley, New York, in 1934 after dating for a few years. With their friends at their side, the couple celebrated their anniversary at St. John's Home along with staff.
“He said 'I'm going to Ripley. Are you going with me?' Ripley, in Meadville at that time, was a place you went to get married— on the quiet or on the spur of the moment,” said Virgilia as she remembered the proposal.
The couple lives by some basic rules, like never going to bed angry, and the couple has also had a simple life. Virgilia joked she would claw out the eyes of any woman who dared to look at her husband.
"I love Bob and I probably always will. Whether he's here or I am not here...I'll still love him," said Virgilia.
Robert said he would say the same thing to Virgilia, especially on their 77th anniversary.
“I gave her a hug, there, awhile ago,” said Robert.
The couple has one daughter, two granddaughters and two great grandchildren
