EL PASO – The P.T.A. and some community members on the west side of El Paso are making their goal of building a school playground at the Lundy Elementary school a reality.
The P.T.A. had been working to raise money for a playground for 2nd through 5th graders, since before the school opened, in March 2010. Through contributors and sales from catalogs, t-shirts and cookie dough, they managed to get over $49,000 for the project.
Madra Belmont is a secretary for the P.T.A., and she said the playground is necessary for the well-being of the students. “Kids need to play...there have been many studies that have shown benefits of play from not only a physical standpoint...but also there are cognitive, social, and emotional benefits...”
Tomorrow, over 200 volunteers are going to the elementary school to help build the playground. They are hoping to have it finished, by this weekend.
