TUCSON, AZ— Details are beginning to emerge about the shooter behind the Tucson shootings on Saturday, and his ex-girlfriends are giving details.
Jared Lee Loughner has been described as silent, a loner, troubled, and angry. Loughner kept away from everyone, but Ashley Figueroa, an ex-girlfriend of Loughner's, said the one subject that would “set him off” was politics.
Figueroa also said that Loughner “thought the government was trying to take over everybody, and that Americans had no say in things.” Figueroa also said Loughner had an unstable and rocky relationship with his parents.
Figueroa met with Loughner three or four months ago, “[and] it was like staring into somebody you didn't know.” Figueroa also added that she didn't think Loughner was mentally ill, but was merely faking it and had probably planned the attack for some time.
Kelsey Hawkes, another former girlfriend, also said Loughner is different than the person she dated in high school.
“The Jared that I used to know is completely changed from what the world sees him as now. I would never expect to see him become what he has.” Hawkes also said that Loughner “was becoming a little isolated, some involvement in drugs or alcohol, I never tried to regain contact with him [after that].”
Loughner made his first court appearance in Phoenix on Monday afternoon. Six people, including a 9-year-old girl and a judge, were killed in Saturday's shooting. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-AZ, was shot in the head, and is currently in the hospital.
