EL PASO - What's been dubbed as a complicated relationship between the county, city, and MHMR will soon be over.
City council voted today to withdraw from the interlocal agreement with MHMR. Council members said they wanted one entity to be in charge so the organization could be held to a higher accountability standard.
County judge Veronica Escobar, who has lightly referred to herself as the aggressive groom dealing with a reluctant bride, said she was frustrated with the council's vote.
"I think that is a product of a city council that is not interested," she said at the meeting. She said it was in the city's best interest to have seats on the board of MHMR because their largest entity, the police department, is usually the first responder in incidents or calls involving the mentally ill.
We will have more reaction from Escobar, as well as council members, tonight at 5, 6, and 10.
