UTEP (12-3) opens defense of its Conference USA title at home versus Tulsa (7-6) on Wednesday. The Miners won the league’s regular season crown a year ago, posting a 15-1 record. UTEP has won 17 of its last 19 games versus C-USA competition, including last season’s run to the championship game of the league tournament.
The Miners have tied the school record for most wins entering league play with 12. The feat was previously achieved by the 1983-84 squad that took a 12-0 mark into its WAC opener against Air Force.
UTEP is 5-0 in Conference USA openers. Four of the wins have come against SMU. The Miners won at SMU in 2006 (80-67) and 2009 (74-68), and knocked off the Mustangs in El Paso in 2008 (79-66) and 2010 (49-45). In 2007, UTEP won its C-USA opener at home against UAB (76-63).
Overall the Miners have won six straight league openers dating back to their days in the Western Athletic Conference, a school record.
UTEP begins its sixth C-USA season on Wednesday against Tulsa. The Miners were 11-3 in league play in 2006, 6-10 in 2007, 8-8 in 2008, 10-6 in 2009 and 15-1 in 2010 for a composite ledger of 50-28.
The Miners’ home record in C-USA action stands at 32-7 (7-0 in 2006, 5-3 in 2007, 7-1 in 2008, 5-3 in 2009, 8-0 in 2010).
UTEP carries a 14-game regular season winning streak versus C-USA teams into the 2011 schedule. The Miners have won 10 straight home games against C-USA opponents and are 13-1 in their last 14 league games at the Haskins Center.
