EL PASO -Sheriff's deputies are warning the public about a phone scam targeting borderland residents who may have family members in Mexico.
Here's what to look out for.
Deputies say the suspects call people on their home phone and try to convince them they are a relative calling from Mexico.
They usually tell a story of being involved in an accident and that they need money to get someone out of jail or pay medical bills.
The caller then provides information on how to get them the money. Sometimes through Western Union.
Nohemi Sanchez was at work last week when she got a call from her father who said he needed to gather money to help out their cousin in Mexico.
Sanchez checked things a little further and found out her cousin was not in trouble and not even in Mexico.
She says the callers were very persistent and repeatedly tried to convince her father, who is elderly, that his family was in trouble.
