The execution of convicted serial killer David Leonard Wood has been stayed.
Wood's lawyers won an appeal, presenting evidence they argue proves their client is mentally retarded.
Under the law, mentally retarded inmates can't be put to death.
El Paso lawyer Dolph Quijano think Wood, his former client, is mentally disabled.
Quijano represented Wood in 1992 when he was convicted of murdering of 6 El Paso women.
He says Wood didn't cooperate with his defense, had a low IQ, and had bizarre outbursts in court.
Quijano provided Wood's current lawyers with an affidavit saying he believes Wood is mentally disabled.
A court will now review the evidence and decide if Wood is mentally retarded.
A date for the hearing hasn't been set.
