You would think the Eastwood wrestling team would be in rebuilding mode after losing their coach, but that's far from the truth. In fact, Eastwood is looking at two potential State Champions, all on one team. Led by new Head Coach Rocky Rodriguez, Eastwood returns defending State Champ Andy Rico (143 pound Champ) and Devin Vasquez (4th at State). Rico was the national runner-up in Greco Wrestling, while Vasquez earned All-American honors.
"My focus is to win nationals, state is another big goal of mine, but I am looking towards nationals. I shouldn't look past state, but that's just a stepping stone to get to nationals, I think," said Rico. "It's just really awesome, I have a big reputation to hold on to, so it's going to be a big year." Sophomore Devin Vasquez added, "oh, he's helped me tremendously, when we go to nationals, I can feel it. He's perfect for me because I am horrible with tall guys, but he helped me a lot."
The Wrestling State Regional Tournament will be held in mid-February.
