With the game on the line, UTEP Senior Quarterback Trevor Vittatoe threw a crucial interception deep in Tulsa territory, and the Golden Hurricane held on for a 31-28 victory over UTEP. The Miners fall to 6-6 on the seaosn, and will now have to wait until the first week of December to find out their bowl fate.
Senior QB Trevor Vittatoe passed Marshall’s Byron Leftwich into 18th place on the all-time NCAA total offense list with 12,089 yards.
Junior RB Joe Banyard became the first UTEP player to rush for 100 yards this season, ending a streak of 12 straight games (dating back to 2009) in which the Miners did not have a 100-yard rusher. Banyard’s 155 yards were a collegiate best.
Banyard’s 66-yard touchdown run in the second quarter was the longest by a UTEP player since Howard Jackson had a 78-yard run versus San Jose State on Nov. 8, 2003. Hence, Banyard’s run is the longest by a Miner both in the Mike Price era and versus a Conference USA opponent.
Sophomore WR Marlon McClure becomes the third UTEP player with two kickoff returns for a touchdown in a season, joining Luther Johnson in 1985 and Roy Ross in 1990. McClure is the first Miner to score a kickoff return for a touchdown in back-to-back games following a 100-yard return at Arkansas last week.
Senior WR Kris Adams extended his streak of games with a catch to 36.
The Miners rushed for over 200 yards as a team for the third time this season.
The home team has won the last seven games in the UTEP-Tulsa series.
UTEP lost its 11th straight C-USA road game and was winless on the road in conference play in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2001-02.
