Socorro - The city of Socorro has started the process to recall its mayor and a councilman, who are each facing serious criminal charges.
At last night's meeting council voted unanimously to start discussing a recall of Mayor Willie Gandara and Councilman Luis Varela.
This came just two days after Varela was arrested for allegedly trying to sell marijuana to undercover Sheirff's deputies. Deputies also say he had cocaine in his truck. He remained in jail Friday morning on a $140,000 bond.
Gandara was indicted earlier this year on federal corruption charges. Council members don't think either will resign.
“It seems like there's this attitude amongst council members that you can be indicted or be busted on drug charges and you don't have to resign. that needs to stop today,” said city representative Jesus Gandara Jr.
The special meeting to start the recall will be next week. After that, a public hearing will be held and we're told the issue could be in the hands of voters by February.
