All-American Risper Kimaiyo became the first woman in program history to win a NCAA cross country regional meet crossing the finish line with a course record time of 20:02 at the 2010 Mountain Regional Championships in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Saturday morning.
The UTEP women finished with 218 to place seventh out of 19 teams that ran at the Rose Parks Golf Course. Junior Kathya Garcia was the second Miner to cross the finish line with a time of 20:59 for 13th place. Kimaiyo and Garcia are likely headed to the NCAA Cross Country Championships with individual bids made official, along with all-region honors, tomorrow afternoon.
Glady Chumba clocked in at 21:45 for 39th place and Karina Garcia was 65th completing the 6K race at 22:16. Kitria Stewart posted a time of 23:07 (103rd).
The men’s squad finished eighth with 210 points. The Miners were led by 2010 Conference USA Champion Elkana Rotich who finished 22nd with a time of 30:26. Justice Chirchir was the second Miner, 29th runner overall, across the finish tape at 30:44 for 29th.
Senior Robert Menjo concluded his Miner career with a 47th-place finish clocking in at 31:19. Sophomore Solomon Gardea was 55th with a time of 31:30 and freshman Abel Koskey was 57th at 31:41.
