Three 3rd grade students at Tombaugh Elementary in Las Cruces say during recess, a man in a white car rolled down his window and pointed a rifle at them.
Those students ran and told administrators who locked down the school and call the sheriff's department.
Students were kept inside for the rest of the day but classes went on as normal. Sheriff's deputies patrolling the area didn't find the suspect. Administrators and parents are very concerned that someone would drive onto school property and point a gun at a bunch of kids.
"we have to treat, treat obviously everything is a potentially very serious situation until you know different," said district spokesperson Michael Cook. "This is a really good example."
"They're children and what they did was tell someone right away which is important," said Melissa Hernandez, the mother of two children who attend Tombaugh.
The Las Cruces Public School District does believe that this is the first lock down so far this school year, though they could not say for sure.
