UTEP is enjoying its highest number of transfer students ever. Most are from EPCC but many transfer students are also Fort Bliss soldiers who want to use their credits toward a UTEP degree.
Dr. Diana Natalicio, the university's president, says they rely heavily on donors to add to their scholarship fund to help ease the financial stress for students.
"We recognize that there's a cost differential between the 2 institutions," said Dr. Natalicio. "There's a bit of a sticker shock, if you will, when the students transfer from community college."
Seventy students from El Paso Community College were given full tuition scholarships to transfer to UTEP. Those scholarships are good for tuition and books for two years.
