EL PASO - A new study reports just a few American adults exercise daily... which may account for this country's "growing" problem.
Rene Armijo helps members of his gym learn the ropes to knock off those extra pounds.
"This is something that must be done. Otherwise, you're shaving years off of your life-expectancy. If people haven't gotten the memo that being overweight is damaging to your health, I don't know what else needs to be done."
Armijo... president of Fighter Physique... says the results of this recent study disappoint him... but they do not surprise him... as an obesity epidemic has left many Americans with love handles they hate and spare tires to deflate.
The American Time Use Survey... a national telephone-based poll that asked participants what they did in the preceding 24 hours... found only 5-percent of Americans exercise daily.
"I think that could be why America is the fattest country."
Researchers analyzed data collected between 2003 and 2005 from nearly 80,000 participants.
Armijo blames technology for the lack of physical activity.
"A lot of people are sitting on their butt, on facebook, on the computer, watching TV."
As a matter of fact... about 80-percent of respondents reported watching TV or movies in the time leading up to the call from pollsters.
Armijo encourages 30-minutes of exercise daily with someone who's in your corner.
"Surround yourself in an environment where there's other people working out, encouraging you to work out. Try to hang out with friends who like to workout. You guys can workout together because everything is harder alone."
The survey findings are published online and in the October print issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.
