EL PASO - Fans of the blue and orange continue the pigskin tradition of tailgating as the UTEP Miners prepare to take on the Golden Lions of the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff. For most... the day includes eating, drinking... and most importantly... a showing of Miner pride.
The smell of charcoal wafting from UTEP's campus means football season has arrived.
"I'm just excited about the first home game. I have a bunch of friends here from highschool, and from college. We just bought this grill for the season and we're just ready for the game and go Miners!"
These Miner fans know how to go the extra yard when showing their school spirit.
"We just got a couple tents, some grills, just cooking out, relaxing, having a few beers."
Of course... the food and drinks all lead up to the main event.
"Brings all the fans together before the game, gets them in the right frame mind so everybody's on the same page when we go in there and cheer for our team."
Fans say their support helps the team mine victories on the field.
"A good following of people tailgating has an impact on the team because they know if people are coming out to support."
On-campus tailgating can begin as early as 6 p.m. on the friday before gameday at the RV lot on Schuster Avenue.
This game marks the first of six home games for the season.
