El Paso- The El Paso City Council turned down a landfill contract with a New Mexico company that would have paid the city $2.5 million per year.
The city will now have to haul it's commercial trash to the Clint and McCombs Landfills, both in El Paso County. New equipment needed at Clint and the re-opening of McCombs will cost the city about $18.5 million.
City staff members had recommended the council accept the New Mexico option.
But councilors argued the amount of trash that will now be kept in El Paso County will provide necessary volume to begin waste-to-energy programs and similar initiatives.
