Thursday, August 5: The time has come for UTEP Football. Weight lifting and body sculpting is over, it's time to play some football. The Miners hit the field running today for the first practice of the preseason. UTEP will practice for two days in El Paso before moving on to Camp Socorro in Socorro, New Mexico, for 9 practices at New Mexico Tech. UTEP Head Coach Mike Price liked the intensity of the first practice. "It was good, we're putting a lot of stuff mentally on these guys. It's their responsibility to catch up to us. The vets are going to go right through it and keep running." Senior Safety Braxton Amy returns for his 6th season at UTEP, most of it under injury, but now he's healthy and ready to play. "It's exciting, everybody is excited the first day. Guys are going a million miles an hour, maybe too fast. There is a lot of stuff being put in. A lot of new faces, so it can be a bit chaotic at times, but guys are definitely fired up."
UTEP has welcomed several new coaches, including defensive coordinator Andre Patterson. Patterson is the third defensive coordinator in four seasons at UTEP. Mike Price said, "I think the new coaches are doing a great job. We already had spring together and we had 10 camps that we did together this summer, so they are new to the public, but not new to each other, so we are getting a long real good." Andre Patterson added, "Finally getting them back out here, working on football. They have been running, lifting and doing all these things to change their bodies, through summer, and now you get a chance to come out here and play the game."
