El Paso Police began a new push today to encourage people to keep their garage doors closed. Officers said it is easy to keep the garage doors open in triple digit heat but then forget about them, inviting burglars in.
"Not everybody can afford refrigerated air conditioning and in a city where most people have swamp coolers, that's what they're going to do to try and get the heat out of the house," Milian said. "But they forget the door is unattended and that's when the burglaries can happen, in a matter of seconds."
He also said that although burglary numbers are down this month, they can go back up at anytime because of carelessness. They will go door to door if they have to, to remind people to stay safe.
"Burglars here in El Paso are opportunistic and once they see that opportunity, they're going to take it," said Jose Milian, an office with the Westside Regional Command Center.
