Would-be Times Square bomber Faisal Shahzad entered a surprise guilty plea to ten terrorism charges Monday.
The Pakistani-born U.S. citizen tried to set off a car bomb in New York's Times Square on May 1st.
He pleaded guilty to charges including attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction.
In making his plea Shahzad admitted he drove an SUV packed with explosives to Times Square at a busy time in order to do maximum damage.
Justice Department officials said Shahzad made this decision on his own without any plea agreement in place.
His sentencing is set for October.
