A Dona Ana Detention Center employee is speaking out a day after an inmate almost gets released by accident.
We reported that Javier Molina pretended to be his sleeping roommate when officers came by the cell to release the man.
An officer trainee in the booking center who saw the incident unfold told News Channel Nine that they were very busy when it happened, but they caught it just in time.
"We were really, really busy that day, and to be honest, it could happen to anybody," Jeremy Maldonado said. "We were too much in a hurry and we ended up making a mistake."
Maldonado said they realized they had the wrong man when they got the tattoo check.
"He ended up coming out all the way until getting his property," Maldonado said. "I'm pretty sure that our booking staff is going to have to have a meeting and let them know this is what we need to do from now on."
A spokesman on behalf of the detention center said all staff members followed normal procedure and the inmate never left the secure area.
Molina now faces additional charges.
