DONA ANA COUNTY -- An inmate almost escaped from the Dona Ana County Jail by pretending he was another inmate being released on bond.
Investigators with the Dona Ana County Sheriff's Department said Javier Molina told guards he was his cell mate, who was asleep, when they called his name.
Detention Center staff then processed Molina out of the facility under the assumed name of the other bonded out inmate.
Investigators say Molina only had a few steps to go before a staff member recognized his real identity and foiled the escape.
Molina, who was in jail on a robbery charge, now faces additional felony charges of forgery, and attempting to escape from jail.
