Manager refused to match coupon from Mexican grocer due to "inferior quality"...
Walmart has apologized after a manager's comments to an NBC shopping blogger.
Amy Yates-Garmatz writes the Penny Pinching blog for NBC station KXAS in Dallas, Texas.
She says she couldn't believe what happened when she went to a Walmart in Midlothian to buy chicken using Walmart's price-matching guarantee.
The ad she was hoping to price-match was for El Rio Grande Supermercado, a growing grocery chain with seven locations in north Texas.
El Rio Grande was offering chicken breasts for $1.00 per pound.
"The cashier said she wasn't familiar with the comp ad process, she was new, so she asked for the customer service manager to come over. She came over, looked at the ad and said, 'We really don't do price comparisons for Mexican stores.' There was a big silence," Amy explained. "So when I asked, 'Why Mexican stores? What's wrong with Mexican stores?' she said, 'The quality is inferior. Our quality is better.'"
Amy says she pressed the issue and got her discount, but was still very upset as she left the store.
"As a Mexican, I was a bit offended by the 'inferiority' of Mexican supermarkets, yes..." she said.
In a statement, the manager of the the Midlothian Walmart said:
"We apologize for this incident. It is Walmart's policy to ad match on any local competitor's ad on identical items, and we are taking steps to reinforce that policy with our associates so that this does not happen again."
