Kerrie Muncrief was looking for a way to keep her home cool, so she turned to Art Amaral, owner of Screens West of El Paso to install solar screens on her windows. She says Amaral told her he could do the job for about $1,700.
"He said he would have all the screens and promised to have everything done in 7 to 10 business days like it says in the contract," said Muncrief.
Happy with the price, Kerrie and her husband signed a contract and paid the total up front.
"He cashed my check right a way, within a day," she says.
That was back in October, but it was not until two months later that he started the work.
"We called him probably every single day for weeks. He came back and he started working and he measured and then he left a couple of screens undone, so we called him again. He came back to do it again," Muncrief said.
Kerrie's problems didn't end there. She says the last time she saw Amaral was in December. She says he finished all but three windows, but since then, she has not been able to get a hold of him.
Muncrief says, "we could leave messages at first and now it just says the Cricket customer is out of the service area."
We got the same response and also tried the business number listed with the Better Business Bureau, but no answer. And when we visited the addresses listed for the company, Screens West of El Paso was no where to be found. Nearby business owners we spoke with said they had not heard of the company.
We checked with the Better Business Bureau and according to their website, Screens West of El Paso has no prior complaints with the BBB, but that may change soon if Amaral does not respond to the complaint filed by Kerrie last week. The BBB says Amaral has 8 days to respond. If not, the complaint will be posted on the BBB website.
That's no consolation for Kerrie, who says she just wants him to finish the work he already started.
