LAS CRUCES, NM - A plane crash in Las Cruces sent three people to the hospital, and now an investigation into the cause of the crash is underway.
The owner of the plane identified the pilot as Doug Newton. We're told he lost power shortly after take off and clipped a fence before the plane landed nose down in the dirt.
Newton was flown to a local hospital with head trauma, and the two others on board were also taken to a hospital.
Now the question is what caused Newton, who's described as an experienced pilot who used to fly for the Navy, to crash.
"This is probably the most experienced and the best pilot on the field. He's flown thousands of hours in different kinds of planes. So if something was to happen to an airplane this is the guy I want to be the pilot," Jo Asprey said.
Asprey says Newton was taking the other two people sightseeing for his birthday, but it's still unclear who the other two people are.
We're told the Flight Safety Division of New Mexico will likely investigate.
