Fire Destroys One Maquila, Damages Another
A fire that broke out at a Juarez maquila yesterday has been contained.
We're told the M.C.S. Maquila, a maker of wooden picture frames, was completely destroyed by the fire. A second maquila also caught fire before midnight and was heavily damaged.
Firefighters say it will take several days to make sure all of the hot spots are out.
Juarez Mayor Jose Reyes Ferriz called Mayor John Cook to ask if El Paso firefighters could come over to assist, but Cook decided not to send any to Juarez.
He says he would only consider sending firefighters across the border if lives or large pieces of property were endangered, and not just a few maquilas.
This comes days after another maquila fire at the Fanosa Asphault Plant. Investigators have ruled out arson, but they're still trying to determine how that fire started.
